St. Lucia’s stores are a lot smaller than commercial centres overseas, nevertheless they do offer exquisite things that shoppers won’t find anywhere else. Colombian Emeralds and Little Switzerland, two fine international stores, located at Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage duty free shopping centres, sell the finest in timepieces, china, crystal and jewellery, all at tax free prices.
Castries Market
Discover St. Lucia’s colourful, friendly nature while visiting the 100-year-old Saturday Market in the capital of Castries. Here you’ll find bountiful bananas, today’s catch, local spices such as mace, nutmeg, cinnamon, cocoa and hot pepper sauces which make great gifts and souvenirs. In the adjacent Craft Market are baskets, brooms and other straw goods, wood carvings, pottery and local artists wares at good prices. There is also a small market on the waterfront in Soufriére where some handicrafts and spices are sold.
Pointe SeraphinePointe Seraphine is an attractive, modern shopping complex located in the port of Castries with many restaurants and duty-free shops such as Corpelon Liquor & Tobacco, specializing in Cuban and Dominican Republic cigars; St. Lucia Fine Arts with original watercolors by Lewellyn Xavier, antique English prints and silver jewelry made by Mr. Xavier; Little Switzerland for a wide range of famous-name Swiss watches, crystal, china and jewelry; Paramount electronic and music centre for audio/video electronics & accessories plus Caribbean music CD’s; and Pickwick & Co. for everything imported from England-Wimbledon, Pringle, Portmeirion, Wedgewood and Edinburgh Crystal.
Rodney Bay Shopping Mall
The Rodney Bay Shopping Mall, in Rodney Bay, has a great supermarket at street level. Upstairs is the Sunshine Bookshop, which also has a store in Gablewoods Mall . They carry Caribbean authors, newspapers and a good selection of Caribbean cookbooks. The Mall has a variety of food stalls, good for take-out, and Koko Tok, an apparel shop with particularly nice linen and cotton goods.
On the beautiful coast south of Soufriére is Choiseul Arts and Crafts Centre which carries Amerindian baskets and other straw goods plus excellent wood carvings and pottery – well worth the excursion.
